How to Create an At-Home Spa Ritual with JUARA — Your Complete Guide

The difference between a routine and a ritual is not the products you use.

It is the intention behind them.

A routine is something you do quickly, efficiently, in the gap between other things. A ritual is something you step into deliberately — a moment carved out of the day that belongs entirely to you.

The Jamu tradition of Indonesia has understood this for two thousand years. Jamu does not separate beauty from wellness. It does not treat self-care as an occasional luxury to be earned. In the Jamu worldview, the daily act of caring for your skin, your body and your senses is not vanity — it is wisdom. It is how a person stays well, balanced and resilient in a world that constantly asks more of them than they can give.

This is the spirit in which JUARA makes everything it makes. And this is the spirit in which we invite you to experience it.

Before you begin — set the scene

The difference between a rushed skincare routine and a genuine ritual often begins before the first product touches your skin.

Spas do not feel luxurious because of their products alone. They feel luxurious because of atmosphere — the quality of light, the absence of noise, the sense that time has slowed and you are the only thing that matters in this moment.

You can create this in your own bathroom.

Dim or switch off overhead lighting. A warm lamp or two candles placed safely on the vanity will change the entire feeling of the room. Put your phone in another room, or at minimum on silent. If you enjoy music, choose something without lyrics — Indonesian gamelan, soft ambient sound, gentle instrumental. The goal is to create an environment that signals to your nervous system: this time is yours.

Warm your towels if you can — five minutes in a tumble dryer is all it takes. Fill your bathroom with the scent of whatever JUARA product you will use first. The candlenut and rice bran of the Body Polish. The botanical warmth of the Coffee Scrub. Let the sensory experience begin before anything touches your skin.

The full JUARA at-home spa ritual — face and body

This is the complete ritual — the one Metta Murdaya guides at the JUARA Bali retreats, adapted for your home. Allow yourself 45–60 minutes.

Step 1 — Body polish (in the shower or bath)

Begin with body — this is the Jamu way. The body before the face. The foundation before the details.

Apply the Candlenut Body Polish to dry skin before you shower. Work it across your body in slow, circular motions — legs, arms, stomach, back of the arms. The candlenut oil in the polish begins softening and nourishing skin immediately on contact. Leave it on for two minutes while you apply the face scrub simultaneously (see below). Then step into a warm — not hot — shower and rinse both together.

If you want a more invigorating, circulation-stimulating experience, use the Invigorating Coffee Scrub on the body instead — particularly effective on rough areas like knees, elbows and thighs. The coffee awakens the senses in a way the Body Polish does not. Choose based on the mood you want to create.

Step 2 — Face scrub (while the body polish is on)

While the Body Polish is working on your body, apply the Radiance Enzyme Scrub to dry or slightly damp skin on your face. Massage gently in circular motions — the enzymes from bamboo and apple are active from the moment they contact skin. You do not need pressure. You need time.

Leave it on while you rinse the body polish in the shower. Your face scrub and body scrub finish at the same moment. This is the professional spa technique of simultaneous layering — efficient, effective and deeply satisfying.

Rinse your face last, with cool water. The temperature contrast is intentional — it closes pores, calms the skin and creates that post-facial tightening sensation you feel after a professional treatment.

Step 3 — Body moisture while skin is warm

Step out of the shower and pat — never rub — your body dry. Your skin is warm and porous and in its most receptive state.

Apply the Candlenut Body Crème immediately while skin is still slightly damp. The warmth of your skin opens every pore and allows the crème to absorb more deeply than it ever would on cold, dry skin. Work it across your whole body, taking time over areas that tend towards dryness.

While the crème absorbs — which takes only a few minutes — move to your face.

Step 4 — Face essence

Pat the Triple Tea Antioxidant Essence into your face and neck with both palms — the way Javanese women apply Jamu, never swiping, always pressing. Freshly exfoliated skin will absorb this essence noticeably more deeply than usual. You will feel it.

Let it absorb for one full minute before moving to the next step.

Step 5 — Face serum and moisturiser

Apply your ritual serum — the Radiance Complex Plumping Serum for normal to dry skin, or the Clove Flower and Turmeric Anti-Ageing Serum for oily, combination or ageing-conscious skin. Two to three drops, pressed between your palms and patted gently onto skin.

Follow with your moisturiser — the Sweet Black Tea and Rice Moisturiser for normal to dry skin, or the Sweet Black Tea and Ginger Oil-Free Moisturiser for oily and combination skin.

Step 6 — Face oil and rose quartz roller

This is the moment the ritual becomes truly spa-like.

Apply two to three drops of the Radiance Vitality Oil while your moisturiser is still slightly tacky. Press it into your skin with your palms — do not rub. Then take your Rose Quartz Face Roller and work upwards — neck to jaw, jaw to cheek, cheek to temple, temple to forehead — in slow, intentional strokes.

The rose quartz stays cool, which assists lymphatic drainage and reduces puffiness. The oil absorbs more deeply with the warmth and pressure of the roller. After five minutes your skin will be visibly luminous in a way that no product alone achieves.

Step 7 — Seal the body

Return to your body. Apply a few drops of Candlenut Glow Body Oil or Kartini Body Oil to your legs, shoulders and décolletage — wherever you want visible glow. Press it into skin that has already absorbed the Body Crème. You are sealing rather than replacing. The result is the skin luminosity you associate with a professional body treatment.

Making it a weekly practice

You do not need to do the full ritual every day. The power of the Jamu approach is in consistency, not intensity.

A simple daily ritual — cleanser, essence, serum, moisturiser — takes four minutes morning and evening. The full at-home spa ritual belongs to one evening or morning per week.

Block it in your diary. Give it a name. Treat it with the same seriousness you give every other commitment in your week.

Because if the Jamu tradition teaches us one thing, it is this: you cannot pour from an empty vessel. The ritual is not a luxury. It is how you stay full.
